A modern forecast is a dozen numbers pretending to be one. Knowing which ones deserve your attention — and what each is actually claiming — turns the panel from decoration into a decision tool.
“Feels like” is the honest temperature
Air temperature is measured in the shade, in still air, which is a place you rarely stand. Feels-like (apparent temperature) corrects for the two things your body actually notices: wind, which strips heat away and drags the number down in winter, and humidity, which blocks sweat from evaporating and pushes it up in summer. When the two temperatures diverge sharply, believe feels-like — it’s the one modelling your physiology.
Precipitation probability is not coverage
“70% chance of rain” means: in seven out of ten runs of this weather situation, measurable rain falls at this point. It says nothing about how much or for how long — a 90% chance of ten minutes of drizzle is a better cycling day than a 40% chance of thunderstorms. Pair the probability with the precipitation amount (millimetres) to get the full claim: probability is “whether”, millimetres are “how bad”.
Pressure is the plot, not a character
A single pressure reading (1008 hPa, say) is nearly meaningless; the trend is the forecast. Steadily falling pressure means an approaching low — expect cloud, wind, rain within a day or so. Rising pressure means settling, clearing weather. A fast fall (more than ~3 hPa in three hours) is the classic signature of something energetic arriving. Sailors and migraine sufferers have both known this for centuries.
UV doesn’t care how warm it is
The UV index is driven by sun angle, ozone, and cloud — not temperature. A crisp 18° late-June day can carry a burning UV of 8 while a sweltering 30° August evening reads 2. Above UV 3, unprotected skin burns in well under an hour; above 8, in minutes. It’s the number most worth checking that almost nobody checks.
Two more habits worth stealing from forecasters: read wind gusts rather than average speed (gusts are what knock cyclists over and cancel ferries), and treat the overnight minimum as the heatwave danger number — bodies recover at night or not at all.
